Scripture Engagement

So, you want to make a decent audio recording of some music, or speech and want to know how? There are lots of blogs and YouTube videos out there on this, but some have way too much equipment listed. Here are the bare essentials: Condenser microphone as per the picture Audio interface Cables - XLR, USB, etc. A pop filter (for speech and vocals) A DAW - digital analogue workstation - which is the software you need A room or booth ('yurt') that has been sound-proofed and acoustically deadened None of this will cost very much, in fact the software (the DAW) can be obtained for free. Some people swear by Audacity , but I prefer Cakewalk by Bandlab. The other option is just to look for an audio interface that has free software bundled with it. The advantages are: It makes the books available in a very useful way. Various partners can use them for their ministry Changes will need to be made to the style of some sentences as you make the recordings. For instance, word order changes might need to be made. These can then be included in the print version, so they match. I'm beginning to get asked a lot of questions about recording audio. I'm thinking about voice recordings of Scripture. Here are some things to think about: Equipment - you only need a USB microphone or decent headset with microphone, or a condenser microphone with pop filter and sound card (that plugs into your USB port) You also need to make an acoustic baffle to absorb sound. This will cut out unwanted echo called 'reverb'. In SIL you would have thought our ultimate goal is to produce New Testaments and Bibles (not necessarily in that order), but that is not so. If the outcome you write up in your plan is 'members of the language communities are actively involved in producing appropriate high quality Scriptures and Scripture products and increasingly own the process of making them available', as it is in one SIL group, then although that may look good to funders and supporting churches, it isn't necessarily what's needed. The end (ultimate goal) of translation is transformed communities/lives , therefore we need to merge Scripture engagement and translation into one outcome, which would be something like: 'Through engagement with available and accessible Scripture products and Scripture-based products, communities are internalising the good news and demonstrating it in their daily lives.'
